In Stokes, historic Dodson could be razed

Southern Stokes County has already lost one local landmark and is at risk of losing another.

St. Philip's Church, which had been part of the Germanton community for more the 120 years, has been moved to a new location in Carrboro, where it will serve an Episcopal congregation that had land but no building of its own.

Another historic location on the edge of Walnut Cove's downtown - The Dodson Hotel, circa 1912 - has been mostly vacant for years, is roped off with yellow tape, has bricks falling off its exterior and is at risk of collapsing on itself like a rotting jack-o-lantern. Town officials are aware of the problem and the old hotel may be headed toward demolition.

Patti Dunlap, the president of the Stokes County Historical Society, wanted to make sure that people in the area were aware of the value of the county's historical properties before any more landmarks are lost.
