David Denby, in The New Yorker, has called it a "fascinating, touching, and intellectually tough-minded documentary." The New York Times has made it a Critic's Pick.

Preservation NC is thrilled to sponsor the Winston-Salem premiere of the film on Thursday, October 9. Director Godfrey Cheshire will be on hand with collaborator and co-producer Robert Hinton to discuss the the story behind it.

When his cousin Charlie Silver announced that he was moving Midway Plantation (an antebellum landmark protected by Preservation North Carolina), to a new location, Godfrey Cheshire set out to document the move. Cheshire, well known for his film criticism in the Independent Weekly, tried to learn more about the history of those connected with the plantation, white and black. A chance encounter connected him to Dr. Robert Hinton, a professor at NYU who was a Raleigh native and descendant of a family enslaved at Midway. Hinton joined the project and helped make the movie into a deeper meditation on history, race, and the role of the plantation in cultural memory.

Preservation North Carolina's presentation of the film, plus a reception and post-screening discussion with Godfrey Cheshire and Robert Hinton, will take place at the Salem College Fine Arts Center at 7:30 PM, Thursday, October 9.
