TEXTILE HERITAGE
MUSEUM
Historic 1880 Glencoe Cotton Mill and Mill Village
Alamance County
Burlington, North Carolina
Open Saturdays and Sundays,
1 to 4pm, Free
The
Textile Heritage Museum is a non-profit organization established in Alamance
County as a permanent institution for the study, education, and enjoyment of
our rich textile heritage, which extends back into the 19th century and reaches
forward into the 21st century.
The museum provides insight into the life and times of people in the South.
Connections are being explored between science, history, art, humanities, and
economics, explaining the textile industry’s development and changes the
industry brought to the South. Educational programs, activities and demonstrations
are being developed to enable children and adults to better understand life
in a mill and mill village at the turn of the century.
Glencoe, which is on the Haw River, provides an especially unique opportunity
for visiting an intact 1880’s mill village. Most of the mill village houses
in the South were either sold to individuals or completely destroyed. The buildings
and houses are being preserved and renovated for the enjoyment of new home owners,
tourists and guests. Visitors will be able to stroll along the banks of the
Haw River and learn how waterpower fueled the Southern Industrial Revolution.
Photographs and artifacts pertaining to textile mills and mill villages are
being collected and preserved.
VOLUNTEERS & DONATIONS ARE NEEDED!
If you have an interest in textile history, textile manufacturing, or have stories
or items to share,
please consider volunteering your time and talents.
