Problems and Resolutions

West Village and the Liggett and Myers factory sit within the Brightleaf Historic District, loosely comprised by the western tobacco factories and warehouses of Durham. Immediately to the north are two historic neighborhoods, Trinity Park and Old North Durham, to the east sits downtown Durham with its own historic district, and to the west is Duke University’s East Campus.

Renovation Success
Source of Funding

Existing West Village has been quite successful over the past five years, and the apartments are currently at 98% occupancy. The renovations could be credited with some of the amazing growth and the renaissance being experienced throughout downtown Durham.  The expansion is expected to equal the successes of the existing development, and hopefully spur on more local growth.

Use
Community Benefits

West Village is truly mixed use, with apartments, offices, restaurants and retail in both the existing West Village and the expansion.  The expansion will enhance the transit-oriented nature of the downtown development, including a large new home for the Amtrak station, a close connection to the Triangle Transit Authority’s regional rail station, and the nearby location of the new bus transfer station.
