Historic fire station faces wrecking ball
Statewide News Roundup
February 20, 2010

Charlotte's Historic South End could lose some of its history this spring.  The owner of the historic Dilworth Fire Station No. 2 has rejected an offer from the city and county to buy the property, and has indicated he plans to destroy the 100-year-old building.  The station, built in 1909 to house two horse-drawn fire engines, sits next to the luxury Arlington condos and parking deck. It's a dramatic contrast of old and new.

Links to medical community part of Stokes-Snider House's allure
Statewide News Roundup
February 19, 2010

Salisbury's Stokes-Snider House, a home with strong ties to the medical community in Rowan County, is currently for sale by the Historic Salisbury Foundation.  Dr. J. Ernest Stokes and his wife, Rebekah Marsh Stokes, built the Colonial Revival house on the corner of North Fulton and West Kerr streets around 1922.  Stokes was one of the South's eminent surgeons and a man closely connected to the history of hospitals in Salisbury, including the founding of Rowan Memorial Hospital.  Most of today's Salisburians, however, remember the house as the home of Arnold and Kate Mills Snider.  When Mrs. Snider died in 2006, she left the 4,700-square-foot home to Historic Salisbury Foundation.

Duke Energy project threatens Kituwah site
Statewide News Roundup
February 17, 2010

"The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians may pursue legal action against Duke Energy after learning about the utility company's plans to put an electric substation near Kituwah mound, the tribe's most sacred site.  In November, Duke began bulldozing part of a mountainside tract near the Hyatt Creek/Ela exit off the Smoky Mountain Expressway between Cherokee and Bryson City to prepare for construction of the substation. The mountainside is considered by the Cherokee to be a part of the greater Kituwah mothertown, which was once the tribe's spiritual and political center. Should the project move forward, it would mar a viewshed integral to the tribe's cultural identity. "
