An Update on Cape Lookout |

"On Nov. 1, 2009 the Cape Lookout Lighthouse celebrated its 150th birthday.
The lighthouse recently received $487,000 from the federal government for repairs. Now visitors can climb the cast-iron stairs to the top. Locals and visitors celebrated the grand reopening of the lighthouse Nov. 1.
Cape Lookout Lighthouse was originally built in 1812. It was designed and built by W.H.C. Whiting. But it was too short, so the lighthouse was rebuilt in 1859 to its current height. After the Civil War, Capelookout Lighthouse served as a model for other lighthouses in North Carolina, including Cape Hatteras, Bodie Island, and Currituck Beach Lighthouses. . ."
