"Millie Barbee joined Charles Kuralt, Michael Jordan, Hugh Morton and other famous North Carolinians [November 2] as the historic preservationist and local tourism promoter was honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pin at the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce.

'This is an award that is not just given. It must first be earned,' Rep. Cullie Tarleton said before a packed audience in the chamber’s display room. 'The OLP is the highest recognition a North Carolina civilian can receive and is awarded at the governor’s discretion.' He explained that the award is given to honor an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the state."
