City seeks to bar historic demolition |

A recent squabble with a charter school has prompted the Durham City Council to prepare a request to the N.C. General Assembly for authority to bar the demolition of buildings in local historic districts. The proposed legislation would give Durham's appointed Historic Preservation Commission the power to issue or deny demolition permits, or to conditionally grant them based on a property owner's willingness to replace a structure quickly.
