EPA makes renovations tougher |

Renovating an old house gets more complicated Thursday when new federal regulations on dealing with lead-based paint take effect. For one thing, to work on a house built before 1978, contractors will have to get certified in "lead-safe" practices mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency and then abide by them. The coalition and several historical preservationists staged a demonstration Tuesday of what that means in practical terms.
