Historic house to be demolished

A landmark on the outskirts of Grimesland will be destroyed this weekend when the Grimesland Fire Department burns the 1919 home of the late Otis and Nora Hawkins.  The house serves as the heart of Hawkinstown, a community no doubt familiar to longtime residents of Pitt County.  Suffering from deterioration after the last of the Hawkins family left the house in 1998, it will be burned as a training exercise for the fire department.
