"The former Lexington Memorial Hospital on North Carolina Avenue received historic designation from the Lexington Historic Preservation Commission on Thursday, allowing for the building's owners to apply for federal tax credits as they prepare to renovate the structure that has been functioning as an apartment complex for the elderly and disabled for the past several years.
After a public hearing, the commission approved the status, which will start the process to place the building — built in 1946 — on the National Register of Historical Places. It was designed by prominent North Carolina architect Charles Hartmann, whose other noted works include the original O. Henry Hotel and the Jefferson Standard buildings in Greensboro."
