Highway Marker for YMI Commemorates Asheville’s Vibrant Black Community |
|
An orchestra, women's auxiliary, swimming pool, and a doctor's office were among the wide array of activities and programs available to African Americans in Asheville in the early 1900s. An N.C. Historical Highway marker will be unveiled in a free public program on Friday, March 26, at 10 a.m. in tribute to the Young Men's Institute (YMI). The center was established by industrialist George Vanderbilt for the African American community and construction workers on his home, Biltmore. The YMI became a hub for the black community.
