"To hear longtime residents of High Point tell it, there was a time when Washington Street had it all . . .The community was established in the late 19th century, becoming a booming business, industrial and residential area by the middle of the 20th century. . . . The neighborhood has declined in the years since integration eliminated the need for a separate black business district, particularly during the 1970s, local observers say. But [residents] are working to breathe new life into this once-thriving neighborhood."
