Call for Nominations: Blast for the Past

Historic Charlotte is seeking nominations for its 10th Annual Historic Preservation Awards (Blast for the Past) for the greater Mecklenburg County.  The two-step application includes:

Step One: Email This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it and request a Blast for the Past Preservation Awards nomination form. 

Step Two:  A PowerPoint Template will be emailed to you  to complete with information and pictures about your preservation project.  

Winners will be honored at Historic Charlotte’s annual preservation celebration, Blast for the Past, on Thursday, October 21th, 2010 at the Mint Museum Uptown.  Food, music and historic ambiance will set the stage for the 2010 Historic Charlotte Preservation Awards.  Tickets may be ordered by calling Historic Charlotte, Inc. at 704-375-6145 or online at www.HistoricCharlotte.org after September 1st, 2010.

Nominated projects must have been completed within the last three years on a 50+ year old structure in greater Mecklenburg County.  Projects must exemplify aspects of effective preservation, historic renovation, adaptive reuse and/or new construction or neighborhood planning within a historic context.

There are five award categories: Preservation Residential, Preservation Commercial, Infill Residential, Infill Commercial, and Preservation Excellence. The Preservation Excellence award is given to a person or group that exemplifies excellence in preservation in Mecklenburg County. 

Winners from 2009 include the Funderburk-Johnson House, Morning Star Lutheran Church, the Summit Greenway, Howard Residence/Max & Co., NC Music Factory, and the Dr. Robert Greene House. Durham's Places in Peril: Hillside Park High School
June 06, 2010

Preservation Durham highlights Hillside Park High School, the first African American High School in Durham. The building is ideally located near North Carolina Central University, downtown Durham and the American Tobacco Historic District and is easily accessible to the Durham Freeway. The school is in desperate need of repair, however, and, with most of its windows broken, is exposed to the elements.

Charlotte gets offer for dilapidated historic mills
June 05, 2010

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Landmarks Commission has proposed buying for a nominal fee two of the city's failed housing projects - the Mecklenburg Mill and Johnston Mill in NoDa.  The commission would then attempt to sell the buildings, while working with a developer to preserve the old mills' historical value.

National Park Service Repairs Carl Sandburg Home
June 04, 2010

While many National Historic Sites are losing funding, the National Park Service recently completed a minor restoration project at the Carl Sandburg Home in Flat Rock, North Carolina.

Elizabeth City history scholars named
June 02, 2010

A small scholarship presentation at The Center on Thursday was a first for the Elizabeth City Historic Neighborhood Association.  With parents looking on, ECHNA members presented two $500 scholarships to the winners of their 2010 Historic Preservation Scholarship, Quanetra Respass of Pasquotank County High School and Nicholas Lannon of CamTech High School.

Public Conversations Series - Preserving Charlotte's Past

WFAE is hosting an event called Preserving Charlotte's Past on Thursday June 15.  Panelists and audience members will discuss Charlotte's track record for preserving historic properties and examine the benefits as well as cammon obstacles to preservation efforts.
