David Fischetti (1946-2011)

Engineer Dave Fischetti was best known as the man who moved the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. But preservationists across North Carolina and beyond knew him as funny, generous, and always supportive. Time after time, when detractors claimed that some building was beyond saving, Dave would be there to say otherwise.

And who could argue with him? After all, he moved a lighthouse.

He will be greatly missed.

New Life for Durham's Five Points
March 29, 2011

"Architect Scott Harmon got the Durham City Council's go-ahead Monday night to buy and renovate a century-old city-owned building downtown.

Harmon plans to move his Center Studio Architecture office into the 12,770-square foot building at Five Points. He plans to remodel a street-level section into six office or retail condominiums."

Preservation Durhamwill hold  covenants on the building.

Proposal Could Strengthen Wilmington Development Rules

"A few changes could strengthen Wilmington’s development rules, balancing the need for growth to keep the business district vibrant with the city’s obligation to preserve its most significant historic structures. The proposal before the city planning commission is a good start, but some officials aren’t buying in."

Why Protect the Federal Antiquities Act?
March 17, 2011

"Rep. Virginia Foxx has filed legislation that would seriously undermine the federal Antiquities Act, the law empowering presidents to designate national monuments. Since the law was passed in 1906, 15 presidents have established monuments and protected natural, historical and prehistorical sites from development. Among those 15 was Roosevelt, whose face was carved in stone on Mount Rushmore, and others of Foxx's party, including Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and George W. Bush."

Tarboro's Coolmore Plantation

"This is Coolmore Plantation, [Joe Spiers'] home and one of the most significant pieces of property in North Carolina, an Italian Villa built in 1860 for physician and cotton planter J.J.W. Powell and his wife, Martha. Weather and time and even war have passed through, and while other plantations have fallen, Coolmore has withstood it all."

Bellamy Mansion Museum Celebrates 150th Anniversary

"This year, the Bellamy Mansion Museum marks the 150th anniversary of house's completion. It was built at Fifth Avenue and Market Street from 1859 to 1861."
