Kaid Benfield of the National Resources Defense Council highlights NC's Builders of Hope and their new efforts in New Orleans.
"Builders of Hope is a remarkable North Carolina-based charity that saves older houses from demolition (frequently moving them to a new site), thoroughly rehabbing them to green standards. They then put the homes up for sale at below-market rates to qualifying buyers. (In addition, some of the organization's homes are sold at market rates.) Even better, although the organization benefits from a lot of volunteer help, they also make a concerted effort to hire homeless and other people in transitional situations for their moving and construction work."

"Dave Alsobrooks sees people who aren't there. More specifically, the 35-year-old artist sees people living everyday lives -- changing a light bulb, boiling water for tea -- in vacant, boarded-up houses in the historic East Durham neighborhood near downtown.
In a few months, you'll be able to see them too, when Alsobrooks hangs life-size portraits in the window frames of four empty houses and the old Y.E. Smith Elementary School. Alsobrooks wants to encourage more people to move into the neighborhood of mill cottages fallen on hard times."

"Once a bustling commercial district, the buildings maintain much of their historical integrity, but some were in jeopardy of being torn down . . . Now all the old buildings will be preserved thanks to a federal grant secured by the commission and the town to list the commercial district, as well as the Dover mill village, on the National Register of Historic Places. The nomination has been approved and will be listed in Spring 2011."
