"Wilkesboro's downtown historic district is one of 31 individual properties and districts across the state which have been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The announcement was made by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources.
The properties within the 37-acre historic district were reviewed by the N.C. National Register Advisory Committee, and were subsequently approved by the N.C. State Historic Preservation Officer for state recognition and forwarded to the Keeper of the National Register."

"Thirty-one properties and districts across the state, including the East Main Street Historic District immediately southeast of downtown Brevard, have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources announced this week.
Brevard saw most of its growth during the first two decades of the 20th century and the post-WWII period due both to its reputation as a tourist destination and industrial development taking place in the area. The predominantly residential historic district displays a wide-ranging mix of nationally popular architectural styles common to late 19th- and 20th-century neighborhoods in the state."

"Dr. Anna Pauline (Pauli) Murray became an activist in her twenties, later emerging as a leader in the civil rights and women’s rights movements . . . Today, the one-and-a-half story I-house where Pauli grew up sits far back from the road up against a cemetery. It stands tall and distinct from the other houses around it, but is vacant, rancid, trashed and constantly broken into by vagrants. For years now the community organized meetings to figure out how the house can be saved. Finally, thanks to the Pauli Murray Project, the talking is turning into action. Baby steps, but action!"
