Myrick Howard Preservation Internship

We are pleased to introduce Preservation NC’s 2024 Myrick Howard Preservation Internship recipient, Kyra Sykes. She will be assisting Preservation NC with our property inspections this summer, and we are excited to work with her!

“I fell in love with architecture from the perspective of an inhabitant, not as an architect. Design has always been innate to me, and learning how to express myself through designing space has been fun.”

Kyra is a third-year architecture student at UNC Charlotte who will be entering the MS of Critical Heritage program in January. She brings a passion for place having focused on research of Historical Neighborhoods. In addition to her research on the Cherry Neighborhood in Charlotte, she looked at designing an exhibit as a solution to preserve its identity amid gentrification in the historically Black neighborhood. Kyra also assisted with research for the Phil Freelon Exhibit, Container / Contained.
