Well-educated and well-connected, Charles Barton Keen (1868-1931) enjoyed a 20-year career designing suburban residences and country estates on Philadelphia's "Main Line." Following his commission in 1912 for the Reynolda House country estate in Winston-Salem, Keen relocated his practice to the South. His timing was auspicious: profits of the New South tobacco and textile industries had created substantial first-generation fortunes and a ready market for an architect experienced in country house design and élite social practices. Wake Forest University professor Margaret Supplee Smith will review the career and works of architect Keen, including the Greensboro Country Club and several exquisite homes in Greensboro. Learn more about Keen's legacy in the Gate City, and the families he worked with including the Richardsons, Preyers, McAlisters, Mebanes, and more! Sponsored by Ludowici Roof Tile, the Institute of Classical Architecure and Art, Charlotte, and James S. Collins, Architect.. Light hors d'œuvre, wine, and beer will be served before the presentation at 6:30. Tickets $15 per person. Email us or call 336-272-5003 for details. |
