"The old Ashe County 1930's WPA hospital building is a 26,000 square foot building located in Jefferson, North Carolina. The old Ashe County Hospital is currently in need of considerable repair and renovation. The gray rock structure has sat empty for the past five years and has experienced water damage from a leaking roof. The building itself appears to be a sound structure in that there is no noticeable cracking or structure deterioration, other than that from water damage to the roof and some of the interior walls. The old hospital building is located at 410 McConnell Street, approximately two blocks off the "street between the towns." It is located within the municipal limits of Jefferson NC and is approximately equal distance between the commercial districts of Jefferson and West Jefferson."

The 73 year old building was completed and dedicated in 1939. It served as the community hospital until 1969 when it became a county office building. Subsequently it was used to house nonprofit groups, a North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles office, other community uses before retiring in January 2002.
A Phase 1 Environmental Assessment was performed in November 2006 by Coastal Environmental Consulting, Inc. as part of a North Carolina Rural Center Pre-development grant. Findings indicated, "... no recognized environmental conditions (RECs) as defined by ASTM Standard E 1527-05 were identified on the subject site. No further investigation is recommended."
