Haywood House

Stately Neoclassical Revival farmhouse on 10 acres!

$ 400,000
4036.00 sq. feet

Lot size: 10 acres / Zoning: Residential 3

2989 Thickety Creek Road
Mount Gilead, NC  27306
Montgomery County

Noted in the Guidebook to the Historic Architecture of Piedmont North Carolina by Catherine W. Bishir and Michael T. Southern as Montgomery County's most imposing farmhouse, the Haywood House retains its stately presence today. The impressive Neoclassical Revival farmhouse is in a picturesque rural setting on 10 acres and features an elegant circular driveway with beautifully landscaped grounds.

The earliest section of the house is thought to have been built by Byrd Haywood who settled in the area around 1780. The house was enlarged to its present appearance by Dr. Oscar Haywood in 1902. With over 4,000 square feet, the Haywood House offers space for the family and entertaining.

The two-story Ionic portico leads to an elegant foyer dominated by a graceful stairway leading to the second floor library. Large rift-cut white oak doors in the entry hall open into exquisite parlors with beautiful wood floors accented with mitred corners.

The historic detached kitchen has been connected to the main house and serves as the present kitchen. The house has eight fireplaces featuring brick and wood mantels with six having gas log inserts. There are four bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, sunroom, living room, dining room, storage room/office, and laundry. Several outbuildings are on the property including a barn, workshop, garage, pump house, and an old wellhouse site in the front yard.

Most of the rehabilitation work has been completed by the current owners with only cosmetic work remaining.

Area Information

Located just outside of Mount Gilead, the Haywood House is only 12 miles from the county seat of Troy, 8 miles from Lake Tillery, and 38 miles to Pinehurst.  It is also convenient to Greensboro and Charlotte, both being only an hour away.
