Architectural and Historical Information
On 23 acres just outside the city limits of Rocky Mount, the 1918 Colonial Revival Luther Brake House and Farm retains associated elements and outbuildings from a small dairy operation from the 1930’s. The dairy, built from plans provided by NC State in the 1930’s, still has the milking stalls in place. Other outbuildings include a barn, smokehouse, packhouse, well house, and wash house. A wonderful large garden plot behind the house has already been established.
The Luther Brake House and Farm were built circa 1900 and 1918 for Luther Brake by his father. The property remained in the Brake family for over 100 years. A three-room T-shaped house was constructed around 1900 to replace an earlier house that burned. In 1918, a larger center hall four-room house was built in front and connected to the earlier house by a porch, which has since been enclosed. The 1918 section of the house is a one-story square with hip roof and attic dormer and wrap around front porch.
The interior retains its original architectural details typical of the era including two Colonial Revival mantels with beveled over mirrors in the front rooms and simple Colonial Revival mantels in the rear rooms. The house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, living room, den, dining room, kitchen, and mudroom. Wood floors are currently covered by carpets throughout.
This property would make a wonderful hobby farm with close proximity town and could be lived in during the rehabilitation. Significant stabilization work is needed to the barn and smokehouse.
