Dr. Valerie Ann Johnson, Dean of Arts, Sciences, & Humanities and Professor of Sociology at Shaw, serves on the NC Historical Commission, and is Chair of the NC African American Heritage Commission. She serves as Board Chair for Preservation NC. Dr. Johnson with Dr. Lynn Harris co-edited Excavating the Histories of Slave-Trade and Pirate Ships: Property, Plunder and Loss published by Springer Press (2022).


Timely Connections Lecture Series at the City of Raleigh Museum is a new lecture series presented in cooperation with the NC Humanities Council and Duke Energy. Timely Connections focuses on North Carolina history and culture. A new topic and speaker every session.

Admission is free, but seating is limited. Register HERE.

Doors open at 5:30pm and speakers start at 6:00

All lectures will be held at the City of Raleigh Museum at 220 Fayetteville Street in Downtown Raleigh.
