America 250 Across NC!

Here at Preservation North Carolina, we have learned that the historic properties we protect can reveal fresh perspectives and insights into our nation’s history. Unlike the more familiar narratives of museums and historic sites, our permanently protected properties represent an alternative selection of places that allow new voices to be heard.
In 2026, our nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The journey toward this historic milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, including the people and stories that shaped it.
Preservation North Carolina joins in this celebration by sharing NC’s stories as told through our protected properties. Over the course of the year, we will explore various themes of architecture and history through the lens of historic preservation.
History is complex, and North Carolina’s history is rich but also complicated. The state’s earliest buildings were often built on the land that was the home of indigenous people and built by the hands of highly skilled enslaved craftspeople. We acknowledge this history and strive to better understand the complete history of these historic places.
Check back each month as we reveal our state’s contributions to exciting and new storylines in American History. Follow along on our social media channels and share with your friends!
Founded in 1939, Preservation North Carolina is our state’s largest non-governmental organization that is dedicated to historic preservation. Our mission is protecting endangered historic places that matter to the diverse people of North Carolina, achieved through our nationally-recognized Endangered Properties Program which has protected over 900 historic properties. We have reached this level of success by building a network of supporters who share our passion for place. Please consider joining us!
