The magnificent William C. Coker House and Gardens was built in 1908 for botanist William Coker.
The home’s Prairie Style architecture blends with the natural landscape. Coker’s 2.8 acre estate is a short walk from the UNC campus he helped design, and reflects the plantings seen in the famed Coker Arboretum.

In the 1980s, the late Mary Jane Burns and Dr. Woodrow Burns restored the house to Coker’s
original design using photos from the UNC special collections; the gardens were restored
and documented by Chip Calloway in the 1990s.

In 2019, Woodrow and Catharine Burns permanently protected their beloved home with a detailed preservation easement held by Preservation North Carolina. In 2021, Susan and Richard Allison restored the home and made some renovations to make it their own.
