Established in 1859, High Point grew within an established Quaker settlement at the crossing of the two most important arteries in the state of the era – the Great Fayetteville and Western Railroad (1852) and the NC Railroad (1856). Located on the ridgeline separating the watersheds of the Yadkin and Cape Fear rivers, the village was named for its position at the highest elevation on the railroad between Goldsboro and Charlotte. The village developed slowly until entrepreneurs established lumber milling operations, and later furniture factories in the 1880s and 1890s. Furniture interests were complemented by hosiery mills after the turn of the twentieth century, and the city began a lucrative era of high growth and wealth that lasted through the mid-twentieth century. High Point’s manufacturing prowess began to falter in the 1990s, and the city struggled with disinvestment and abandonment at the start of the twenty-first century. In recent years, groups such as the Southwest Renewal Foundation, Downtown High Point, and the High Point Preservation Society have reinvested in measures to revitalize the city’s core.
