Shaw University will host the annual James A. Forbes, Sr. Lecture Series on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, in the historic Estey Hall auditorium. Our special guest is historian, author, curator, and educator, Lonnie G. Bunch, III the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum complex, who was appointed in June 2019.
Before assuming this position, Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). In this position, he provided strategic leadership in the areas of fundraising, collections, and academic and cultural partnerships. As a public historian and a scholar who brings history to the people, Bunch has spent nearly 30 years in the museum field where he is regarded as one of the nation’s leading figures in the historical and museum community. The James A. Forbes, Sr. Lecture Series, established in 2021 by The Forbes Family Legacy Endowment Fund, is held yearly. The lecture series celebrates the heritage of the Forbes Family and aims to help create a broader academic environment for students and faculty at Shaw University.
