Hickory Landmarks Society, Inc. is looking for a new Executive Director


Background:

The Hickory Landmarks Society is a non-profit historic preservation education institution, founded in 1968. The organization’s mission is “…to serve the Hickory, North Carolina region by leading in the protection of historically or architecturally significant individual landmarks, neighborhoods, and traditions.”   The mission is accomplished by means of education, advocacy, property management, and ensuring responsible historic preservation as part of community growth.  HLS is governed by an 18-member Board of Directors, elected by its membership for three-year terms.  Numerous landmark properties in Hickory have been saved and preserved through its efforts. HLS owns and manages three 19th c. historic house museums, a museum collection of over 8,000 objects and archival material, a historic landmark property under lease to a non-profit organization, and a two-unit residential property under lease.

 

Executive Director:

Objective: To carry out policies set by the Board of Directors, to coordinate activities of the Board of Directors; to assist Board members in program development and long range planning; to provide professional museum management and historic preservation services, including supervision of staff and volunteers.

 

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Office and Personnel Management – Responsible for Hiring, Termination, and Employee Evaluation
  • Long Range Planning Support
  • Budgeting and Management of Restricted Funds; Accounting Oversight
  • Fund Raising and Development, including Annual Campaign and Grant Writing
  • Supervise Annual Membership Campaign
  • Manage Maintenance/Preservation of HLS Properties and Museum Collection
  • Manage Leased Properties
  • Management and Oversight of Educational Programs
  • Promote Community Relations
  • Manage Hickory Endangered Properties Program
  • Serve as a Resource for Technical Advice and Assistance to Owners of
  • Historic Properties in Hickory
  • Serve as Liaison with the City of Hickory Historic Preservation Commission and the United Arts Council of Catawba County

 

Terms:
  • Full Time Position (flexible work arrangement)
  • Subject to Annual Performance Review by the Board of Directors in Consultation with the HLS Personnel Committee  (90-Day Probationary Period)
  • Salary Determined by the Board of Directors in Consultation with the HLS Personnel Committee
  • The Executive Director reports to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors on a monthly basis, working in concert with the Board President

 

Qualifications
  • Masters Degree (preferred) or Bachelors Degree, plus 1-3 years minimum experience in historic preservation management, museum management, non-profit administration, for profit business administration, or related fields
  • Ability to engage effectively with the public
  • Writing and public speaking skills
  • Grantsmanship experience
  • Working knowledge of fundraising, database software, and social media platforms

 

Salary and Benefits

$50,000 – $60,000 salary, depending on qualifications and experience; travel allowance, professional development fees, 2 weeks paid vacation, paid holidays – New Year’s Day, Easter Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (2 days),          Christmas (2 days)
