Wachovia Historical Society presents:

A Tale of Two Journeys
Sunday, January 7, 2024 at 1:30pm

Learn about the incredible 1766 migration from Bethlehem to Bethabara, taken on foot and wagons through the backwoods by eighteen sisters and older girls and only two men. These eighteen females became the backbone of the Single Sisters and Older Girls’ Choirs in Bethabara and Salem. One of these intrepid girls would become the first teacher of the Little Girls’ School which started in 1772 and evolved into the Salem Academy and College we know today.

And just as remarkable, you’ll hear about the month-long, 500-mile reenactment of that journey, taken entirely on foot in the fall of 2021, one of the premier events celebrating the year-long 250th Anniversary of Salem’s founding in 1772, and underscoring the core value Moravians placed on educating women and girls.
